When Epsons are used as intended (color) the difference in dot size between different models is an issue. With monochromatic inksets, each ink a different density, visible dot size has far more to do with separation methods than printer related dot size. With certain methods, for example the Piezo driver and profiles, the difference in physical dot size becomes a practical non-issue. I'd imagine any comments Cone has made about printer model preferences are made within the context of using his driver. Other methods will clearly reveal dot size differences to varying degrees. If reducing visible dots is a goal, there are many ways to approach achieving it, using the Epson driver or RIPs or Cone's. But they all have to do with keeping each successively darker ink out of the scale until it is absolutely necessary. This requires really packing in those dots of lighter inks. Tightly packed dots of light ink do not appear dotty (even with the 3000), widely spaced dots of dark ink does. So, it's about methods, not printers. Obviously the 1160 or other small dot printers allow a less vigorous separation approach, leaving room for other considerations. Tyler
