I have both printers and don't think there's a noticeable difference in the
quality of the prints from either.. But before buying a second printer for
black and white why not at least try printing using QTR/GUI with your
present 2200 and the Epson inks? That's what I've been doing (except that I
substituted MIS Eboni black for the Epson  black) and I've been very happy
with the results.

Thanks to the several responses I got to my question about where to
start with black and white printing. I think I've decided to get
another printer to use for black and white only in addition to keeping
my 2200 for color, and to try out the Ultratones. My question is
whether I should get the 1280 or another 2200 - what would be the
benefits of the roughly $200 more for the 2200? Thanks  alot,
