2200 chip won't reset

2200 chip won't reset

2005-01-07 by David Wroblewski

I've just switched a cart, using my sk168 chip resetter
to reset the chip. Got a green light and everything on the
resetter, so I thought I was good to go.

However, it reads out at it's previous level. I've
tried resetting it again several times, same result.

Does this happen sometimes? That the resetter reports
success but the chip doesn't actually reset? Anyone
have tips to suggest before I break out the exacto
knife and replace the chip?

Yes, sometimes the chips don't reset. That is why I recommend people have a
couple extra around so they're not out of business waiting for the next
shipment.

Okay, thanks. I've refilled the original cart and replaced it.
Curiously, that one reset to 2/3 instead of entirely full
the first time, then totally full on a second try.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

No, on the 2200 each chip carries with it the color
ink it is for.

You can only replace a black with a black, etc.

Is that entirely correct. You may well be right, but there are two
parts to ID on the 2200. There is also the little plastic registration
clip. There are 5 variants: (C, LC), LK, (LM,M), (MK, PK), Y. The two
may be independent but it could be a combination of information from
the chip and position is needed. The reuslt is the same though.

2200 vs. 1280

2005-01-08 by Lynne Siler

Thanks to the several responses I got to my question about where to
start with black and white printing. I think I've decided to get
another printer to use for black and white only in addition to keeping
my 2200 for color, and to try out the Ultratones. My question is
whether I should get the 1280 or another 2200 - what would be the
benefits of the roughly $200 more for the 2200? Thanks alot,

Lynne Siler

Re: [Digital BW] 2200 vs. 1280

2005-01-08 by Douglas Meeuwsen

the 1280 output is about as good as the 2200, so if the 200$ is
important, spend it on ink. By the way, Last summer I was in asheville
North carolina, playing trumpet, with a band from new orleans, and I
just have to say that your town is really something special. What a
beautiful place.

I have both printers and don't think there's a noticeable difference in the
quality of the prints from either.. But before buying a second printer for
black and white why not at least try printing using QTR/GUI with your
present 2200 and the Epson inks? That's what I've been doing (except that I
substituted MIS Eboni black for the Epson black) and I've been very happy
with the results.

I have installed the Eboni ink actually, but it seems like every time I
go to print it is clogged and I have to clean the heads - it's very
frustrating! Well, not every time, but for example when I tried to
print this morning, after using last night, it was clogged.

Also, I just downloaded the QTR a few minutes ago and hit "install
2200" but nothing happened. According to the read me file, I should
have a printer called "Quad 2200" but I don't. Any ideas what is wrong?
Thanks!

I would like to try what you've suggested before buying another printer
for sure!

John, I just assumed the chips were differentiated
in their circuitry. Maybe I spoke too quickly.

I just looked at a spare pair of 2200 carts--
from different variants as you described. Where
is the registration clip you are talking about?
I can't find it.

Thanks,

Lynne or anyone for that matter. Could you direct me to those posts.

I'm new to this group, not new to photography, and would like to add
another printer to my S800 for dedicated B&W.

Let me say,i'm glad i found this group the other day. the few B&W
prints i have done are not very good and i hope to read as many back
posts as i can.

Re: [Digital BW] 2200 vs. 1280

2005-01-08 by Djon

I've just spent an afternoon with QTR, newly installed...it certainly
has resolved most of my main concerns about B&W/2200...

I used one exceptionally wide-ranged, highly detailed scan of a
beautiful industrial photo (better than my own work :-)...everything
from tiny specular highlights to deepest blacks...

Using the Epson pig set I've printed (and made notes on) ten different
versions starting with coldest possible, cold black/heavy sepia, cold
black/heavy warm, cold black/slightly warm etc etc etc... They're ALL
satisfactory (depending upon what you want tone-wise)...none of the
"crossover" and weirdness that I've gotten a lot of when printing
directly from the Epson driver.

Maybe there's a better way to fly, but QTR is a huge step in the right
direction.

My next step is to see how this relates to Qimage, or how Qimage can
approximate this...or if they're good partners in some way.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: 2200 vs. 1280

2005-01-08 by Paul Roark

Dave,

At first I thought you were the David Brooks that wrote the recent
Shutterbug article on B&W printing. That article does review many of the
alternatives.

My index of printing information is at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/index.htm. I review most of the MIS solutions
I've been involved with in Readme files access from that page. (I am not
formally affiliated with MIS.)

As to the subject line, I really like the 2200 and C86 "easy-refill"
cartridges. I'm not sure I want to mess with the old style (including 1280)
carts at all. I think the cost savings from re-filling these carts with
bulk inks pays the difference between the 2200 and 1280 rather quickly.

I use my C86 and 7500 the most. All the other printers just sit around
gathering dust for the most part.

Enjoy your B&W journey.

Let me say,i'm glad i found this group the other day. the few B&W
prints i have done are not very good and i hope to read as many back
posts as i can.

[Digital BW] Re: 2200 vs. 1280

Thank you Paul.

I have never owned Epson printers, just Canon, and i did a search of the
archives and came up empty on Canon inks.
If i stay with Canon, what model or ink combo's i should be aware of.
It looks like Epson has dedicated inks for the B&W proccess,is that
correct.

Nothing against Epson,if Canon has nothing, then Epson it is.<vbg>

Dave,

Apparently the pure pigment inks that I prefer due to their excellent
lightfastness can only be used in Epson printers. What I've heard is that
Epson's patented piezo-electric heads are needed to pump the higher
viscosity inks. The higher viscosities are needed to stop the pigments from
dropping out of suspension.

Bottom line -- I think, for now, we're stuck with Epson printers for carbon
pigment B&W printing. Luckily, they have to keep the prices competitive
with Canon and HP, so we're getting reasonable prices.

Dave,

The thread was named "Update on black and white printing", so you can
look it up that way,

Follow up on QTR

2005-01-10 by Lynne Siler

I've installed QTR and am amazed that it could be that simple to get a
neutral prints after struggling so long. I'd like to use a watercolor
paper with it however - how can I get a profile for Epson Watercolor?
Also, I like the way the image looks on Epson Enhanced Matte, but would
like a "sturdier" paper. Any suggestions?

Thanks for all the responses from this group - what a great resource.
