Digital BW, The Print

Hi,
I just installed QTR on my PC. Using XP pro.
Reading the help file, is it correct that  you have to convert any b/w
photos to grayscale? Also, to get the best looking photos do you always use
the preset curves? I tried using the default of none and the photo looked
terrible.I then used UC-Noblack-neutral on the left and UC-EEuhMatte-warm on
the right and the the next photo was nice but not the best.
I'm using a Epson 2200 and EEM paper. What settings would you recommend to
start with?
