In a previous career I specialize in painting toy prototypes. Painted with very nasty 
lacquers and enamels. As far as respirators find one that meets OSHA and NIOSH 
requirements. 

Replacement carts (filters) are usually made of some kind of charcoal composite. Basically 
if can not smell the paint or laguer through the mask it's working. Once the odor is 
apparent it's time to change the carts.
