Keith,

Not sure about the 'perfect' that you mention. AFAIK each printhead is 
tested by Epson and has a series of numbers (stuck on the side?) that have 
to be entered into the EEPROM by the service program to correct the output 
of the particular printhead (none are exactly the same). So you may be very 
lucky in that your old and replacement printheads had exactly the same 
correction factors, or you just aren't seeing the difference.

I soaked the print-head (not the electronics!) in cleaning solution
for a couple of days.  Still nothing.

However, I happened to have an old 890 that I don't use very often.
It has the identical print-head.  I put its print-head in the 1280
and, voila, perfect nozzle check and prints.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
