The frame spacer is just a piece of material, in the form of a long strip that is placed under the lip of the moulding between the glazing and the print or mat. Is most commonly used in the cases such as this one where the image is already so large that the addition of a mat becomes cumbersome. The glazing is harmful to the print and so it is important that it not be able to come into contact with it. Spacers may also be used with a mat just to provide more depth and they are used in shadowbox frames.
