I leave a lot of white all the way around. It's a hold over from silver days when it stemmed the flow of degradation that normally sarts at the outter edges. Now it gives a large handling area and plenty of excess for mounting/hinging. If it is signed below the image, I leave about 0ne-half the amount of space on the other three sides. (E.g., if it's 1/2" at the bottom, the other sides have 1/4" white inside the mat. Yes, as in the "old days" of photography I always leave more mat at the bottom. It is an optical balance thing.
