That's what I missed, evidently, in my search on QTR on the forum.  I have the 'old' softproofing info from Carl's site and also the info from Roy's site--didn't mesh for me and now this makes it clear why I was confused.

  From Carl's site?  You mean Roy's site.  The way soft-proofing is done has
  changed.  Roy has created an ICC profile methodology which uses Perceptual
  Intent to map from the workspace, QTR Gray LAB, to the print space QTR Gray
  Matte Paper or QTR Gray Photo Paper.  Hence you should soft proof against
  these last two with Perceptual Intent.
