gray lab zip for QTR

gray lab zip for QTR

2005-03-04 by Diane Fields

Now that I have QTR working again, I'm interested in how I can do
softproofing with it. I believe I saw a post from Carl Schofield
about that--but isn't he on a Mac? (and now I have to find that post
and his site again)--or doesn't that make any difference. I also saw
that he had a profile for Hahnemuhle PHotorag. My question is---with
the new 2.1.13 verson and the GUI--would I use the grayspaceXYZ
profiles and use Lou's instructions to extend the possibilities of
Quadtone RIP?

See Roy's site - doesn't matter if PC or Mac. Instructions are included.
Just use the new QTR Gray Lab and the matte and photo icc profiles.

Diane,

If you want to softproof toned prints then take a look at the materials
and downloads on Roy's site (link below). The QTR gray-lab profile is
adequate for softproofing neutral prints and evaluating density and
contrast.

The "new" version is version 2.2. Version 2.1.3 is much older. This could be
the source of the problems you had.

Stephen, you are exactly right. Don't know how I managed to dl. the wrong one. I've downloaded and will reinstall right away. Thanks so much for catching this.

As I understand it it should be possible to tweak the input
transformation (the one that goes back to the Monitor) of the output
profiles so they show the hue of the toner on the monitor as well. This
shouldn't influence the output transformation of the output profiles as
they are separate functions. But it may increase the number of output
profiles too much if every toner gets a set for all the toner steps.

From Carl's site? You mean Roy's site. The way soft-proofing is done has
changed. Roy has created an ICC profile methodology which uses Perceptual
Intent to map from the workspace, QTR Gray LAB, to the print space QTR Gray
Matte Paper or QTR Gray Photo Paper. Hence you should soft proof against
these last two with Perceptual Intent.

That's what I missed, evidently, in my search on QTR on the forum. I have the 'old' softproofing info from Carl's site and also the info from Roy's site--didn't mesh for me and now this makes it clear why I was confused.

Thanks again,
Diane
