It's not a dye or pigment or formulation.  Epson confuses the matter
by calling it "pigment" but they do that to distinguish it from
everything else that's out there.

A pigment is just a colorant, it's in dye and ink. 

What's distinctive about Ultrachrome is the pigment's encapsulation.
None of the competing products are encapsulated.
