Yes, I prefer to see some of the paper also but I hadn't arrived at exactly how much. I also sign on the paper under the image so I like Carolyn's measurements. I've been 'eyeballing' it after I sign--I'll try to standardize this and it will make it much easier.

Like Diane, I've never used stock mats. Where the print falls, somewhat
within a 'standard' size, I have the mats custom cut to keep a .25" reveal
three sides of the print, and .625 bottom. Just a matter of how you like to
present your work I think, I like to see the whole image with the paper
showing a bit as well... I was fortunate to be able to see a couple of
Stieglitz's albumen prints once as well as a few salt prints from that same
era, and happily surprised to see them matted similarly, they were signed
under the image, on the paper.
