Re: [Digital BW] Printers-Epson or Canon

2005-03-18 by Andrei Aderca

Hi Graham

I have been using both Epson and Canon for some time, again
I don't want to start another storm about whose toy is the best
but I have to say in all honesty that if B&W is your main concern,
you would be better served by an Epson.
I use the Canon mostly for color and where non-archival qualities
can be tolerated. It is lightning fast, quiet, easy to refill (no chipped
carts) and uses pretty much all the papers that can take dye ink.
No matter how much tweaking you apply, there is metamerism or
color cast. Again, not wishing to offend anyone but every now and
then I see these comments popping up on the web about people who
are getting perfectly neutral b&w from their Canons. I love my i9100
but would never push affection that far. Lyson manufactures inks for
Canon b&w or quad tones, in my opinion they are very expensive
compared to the alternative third party solutions for Epson such as
MIS. Lyson rates them as archival on their papers, I cannot comment
on either quality or longevity, also the pH is different so you need to
use cleaning carts when switching inks.
I use an Epson 2200 for b&w, there is a plethora of papers and third party
inks available, also RIP's galore. The only gripe I have with it is that
getting out
a 13"x19" is like watching grass grow. The color rendition is also
outstanding but
then again the Canon is no slouch either.
I would seriously consider the Canon for color only and the Epson mostly
for
b&w/color, if you can live with slower speeds. The Canons have a
gzillion nozzles
per sq. inch which allows them to cover an area at a much quicker rate,
the downside
is that most likely they would not be pigment friendly, as far as I
know, there has not
been a pigment solution developed yet for the Canons (Lyson is dye based).

Good luck in your search

Andrei
