Re: [Digital BW] printer selection - newbie needs guidance

Hi Mark

I've had the 1200, 1280, am now using the C84 with EZ inks and
the 2200 with ultrachromes.
No, to answer your question, the 1280 is not really a "point and shoot".
You need to use Paul Roark's curves or your own for that matter, if you
like experimenting. But it is not a slam dunk, allthough the results can
be very rewarding.
You could however try to get just the eboni black from MIS and experiment
with black only. I was very pleased with the results on matte paper, it is worth
a try.

Regards

Andrei

Been lurking. I've been an amateur photographer (mostly med format B&W) for
  many years.

The C86 EZ "load and go" (MIS) sounds great. Can the same be done with the
  1280?

My darkroom preference has been 11x14 glossy prints which aren't as high
gloss finish as I imagine the R800/R1800.
  - A 1280 EZ "load and go" would be a good starting point for me. Is there
  such a thing from MIS?
  - Do gloss papers require coating because of pigment buildup (forgot the
term)? Might be a useful R1800 feature.
  - 2880 x 720 ...2880 dpi seems to make everyone happy but what about the 720
on a 1280. Is the 720 a limitation?. Not sure I understand what 2880 dpi
  x720 dpi means?

I am sure that I will eventually want more control over my prints. I could
buy two 1280's, one for color, one for B&W and acheive control that way or
should I buy a 2200 or R1800. I think the rebate ends soon.

I enjoy the group and thanks for your help.
