Val,

That needs qualifying I think. I have both a 2100 and a R1800, and 
out-of-the-box the R1800 gives me by far the best B&W on premium glossy - 
pretty neutral right across the grayscale. Now if you are talking about 
using the various RIPs such as ImagePrint and QTR, then there is no 
competition at present, since they aren't yet available for the R1800. On 
matte papers the answer might be different, but I rarely use matte. Of the 
various settings in the Epson driver that you can use, I have found that the 
new Color Controls/Adobe RGB setting with y=2.2, gives me the best results 
for both color and black and white.

I asked a similiar question a few weeks ago and the consensus was
the 2200 does better B&W than the 1800.
