question on epson 2200 & R1800 difference in black/white printing?

question on epson 2200 & R1800 difference in black/white printing?

2005-04-29 by bennyisagoodboy

I'm new to the community and am just starting to print black and white digitally.
I'm looking at the Epson 2200 and R1800. Has anyone had experience with
either of these for black and white printing? Is one better for it than the other? I
do color also (and make enlarged negative digitally for alternative processes)
and want to purchase one or the other but not alot of info comparing them.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I asked a similiar question a few weeks ago and the consensus was
the 2200 does better B&W than the 1800. As I recall Paul Roark, who
is one of the most experienced B&W printers that post here, was of
that oppinion. I have subsequently accuired a 2200 and have been
printing with the Harrington QTRip with good results. The best
thing is the various tones you can produce with one ink set. I have
also used the 1280 with MIS UT ink and Paul's curves with good
effect. Again, the ability to vary tone with one inkset is
attractive.

That said, I feel my 1280 with Piezotone selenium ink produce
somehwat better images on matte paper. But with Piezotone inks you
are limited to one tone per inkset. Hope this helps...Val

Greetings Forum, I am new to the group.

Tangential to the 2200 / QTRip comment below: my results with QTRip and
my 2200 is that the image is softened [read blurred, [I'll address the
overly dark tones in a seperate email because I have control over that,
even though the extreme left position of the slider didnt fix it]] So,
I am wondering if others notice a softer image quality through the RIP
versus straight a Photoshop print, where I get very sharp results?

thanks,
-Joie Puckett

Val,

That needs qualifying I think. I have both a 2100 and a R1800, and
out-of-the-box the R1800 gives me by far the best B&W on premium glossy -
pretty neutral right across the grayscale. Now if you are talking about
using the various RIPs such as ImagePrint and QTR, then there is no
competition at present, since they aren't yet available for the R1800. On
matte papers the answer might be different, but I rarely use matte. Of the
various settings in the Epson driver that you can use, I have found that the
new Color Controls/Adobe RGB setting with y=2.2, gives me the best results
for both color and black and white.

Bob Frost.
