Thanks for your suggestions, Paul & Walt. I've never had a chip off a cartridge so think of the two as one unit. But no doubt the problem is with the chip and not the cartridge; unfortunately I threw out the previous epson black-ink cart; but I'll see if I can get the chip off the current one when it runs out of ink. Thanks again, and thank you Paul for your postings regarding the C86 with MIS inks. I've been using it with good results until recently - a banding problem which I'm sure I'll be able to resolve.
