Digital BW, The Print

FWIW, I have a D70 too (and I scan quite a bit of B&W film too,
a tiny bit of color and slide film). I shoot just the sorts of pictures
you describe, plus some street and travel photography and recent
experimentation with some studio strobe lighting.

I've been using a C86 and the MIS EZ inks since last summer or
so, which does a great job for up to 8x10. I used it mostly to print
5x7 prints. Very economical and no fuss and good results. I
experimented a bit with glossy back in August with good results,
but I do the vast majority of my printing on EEM and Matte Scrapbook.

Seeking larger prints, I am now just figuring out a recently acquired
Epson 2200 and QTR. Using the Epson UC inks for hopeful dual duty
color/B&W in one printer. This should get me color and B&W prints
up to 13x19 (I think you can print longer for panoramic type prints too).

I find color works great on the 2200 using PK and Epson Semi Gloss. I
haven't tried matte color prints yet. As for QTR B&W, after a few so-so
experiments with some glossy paper, I installed the matte black cartridge
and immediately got great results on EEM using the QTR Gui application.
Dumb luck, but first prints on EEM looked pretty much exactly like they
do on my monitor (low contrast test pics, though, I now realize).

Just so happens, all of this early experimentation was using some D70
shots converted to B&W, cropped, doctored a bit, resized for printing,
sharpened and saved to tiff.

Anyway, just a newbie report from someone who really isn't interested
in getting a densitometer or trying to create my own curves or whatever.
I guess this is a pretty common simple setup. So far, works great on EEM at
least with no fuss at all. A few more test prints from B&W scans, larger
test prints and tests with Matte Scrapbook and I'll be ponying up the $$
for QTR.
