Richard; My first printer was an Alps 5000, a brand that is no longer imported into the US; It was a thermal transfer printer, with the inks on ribbons like a typewriter. It had silver, gold, and metallic CMY carts, though the driver omly allowed you to use them as 'spot' (solid fields) colors. I got some very interesting results when I started switching bar-code labels and substituting metallics for regular colors. There was one major drawback, and I'm sure the main reason they got beat out of the US market-the printer laid down a visibly mechanical looking dither pattern that made it useless for fine-art printing. really too bad, it would print on damn near anything, much cheaper to run that an inkjet.
