QuadTone Rip

QuadTone Rip

Am I correct that with a Quadtone RIP and a 2200 I should be able to
_potentially_ produce prints that are the equivlent of those from a
1280 with U2 inks? Not identical, but of a similar quality. I do
not get to print frequently and a single printer for B&W and color
that uses Epson inks makes a lot of sense. What has stopped me to
this point is the cost of Imageprint.

With QTR and a 2200 you should be able to produce prints that equal
prints from Imageprint in every way, at a fraction of the cost. It will
also compare very favorably to the UT2 inks, but highlights will be
slightly more dotty due to the lack of a lighter gray ink.

QuadTone Rip

Hi,
I am new to your group. Can anyone give me information on what else
is needed with Epson 2200 and the QuadTone Rip soft ware for B&W
prints? I have heard of something else is needed to plug into the USB
device?

Thank you for your help, Gordon

Gordon,

Nothing extra is required to print. Just download the program, install
it, and begin printing with the supplied profiles.

If you want to build your own profiles, you will need either a
spectrophotometer or a densitometer. It is possible to use a scanner
to fulfill this role, but the results are less accurate and more prone
to error.

QuadTone Rip

Just starting to look into the QTR and Epson 2200, is there another
set of soft ware used by using a flash stick USB connected that is
also used to obtain a better B & W print?

Are you thinking of the dongle that is used in conjunction with the
Imageprint RIP??

Being so new to this technology, and just researching as much as
possible before committing time and dollars into a specific
printer/software for B&W printing, I am not sure if it is the "dongle".

In my researh, noticed on a web site (now unable to locate) that
mentioned a device that looked like a media card (flash stick) that
connected via USB port. This item cost about $450? Not sure if it
was a "dongle"? What does the "dongle" do?

ImagePrint uses a dongle, which is a hardware key. If you don't have it
plugged in, you can't run the software. This prevents piracy.

Obviously, QTR, being free, doesn't use a dongle.

Black & White printer ?

2005-05-19 by Richard Nagle

Well, I have been thinking of purchasing a good B&W photo printer,
are there any out there that use a silver base color with blacks and
grey’s?

or which one does the best for 8x10,12 and 11x14 ?

Thanks -
Richard

Not that I'm aware of. However, the silver idea -- like B&W Magazine -- has
been raised before. I'll see if I can find an appropriate pigment. We
could do that if there is a pigment that'll stay suspended. (Silver itself
has too high a specific gravity.)

The best value for 8.5" wide paper is the C86 with MIS EZ inks. The best
for 13" paper and overall is the 2200. This you can use the OEM inks with a
rip or go with the B&W MIS UT7 and either the Epson driver or a rip.

Slight correction. QTR in not free. If you decide you like it and want to use
it, you are obliged to send Roy the $50 shareware fee.

Re: Black & White printer ?

2005-05-20 by Steven Karafyllakis

Richard;

My first printer was an Alps 5000, a brand that is no longer imported
into the US; It was a thermal transfer printer, with the inks on
ribbons like a typewriter. It had silver, gold, and metallic CMY carts,
though the driver omly allowed you to use them as 'spot' (solid
fields) colors. I got some very interesting results when I started
switching bar-code labels and substituting metallics for regular colors.
There was one major drawback, and I'm sure the main reason they got
beat out of the US market-the printer laid down a visibly mechanical
looking dither pattern that made it useless for fine-art printing.
really too bad, it would print on damn near anything, much cheaper to
run that an inkjet.
