RE: [Digital BW] adjustment curves quadtones mis ut

2005-05-24 by Paul Roark

As others indicated, in a quad (4-ink) printer like the 1160 and 3000, the
UT1 bluish toner is in the yellow ink cart and is controlled by the blue
Photoshop curve.

The hextone UT1 printers have the toner in the magenta and light magenta
spots. This was done to take advantage of the light ink spot. When I
originally mixed the first variable-tone inkset for my 1160 (the
"Variable-Piezo") I had no idea this method of printing would expand into
more printers. So, for historical reasons, we've ended up with a bit of
confusion. (And this is a major reason MIS occasionally makes mistakes
along these lines.)

Different inksets and different printers have different ink tones and
densities in different spots -- much to MIS's chagrin. MIS would love to
have a "one size fits all" inkset, but I don't do things that way. So, they
and their customers suffer a higher rate of mistakes as a trade-off for more
variety.

Hope this helps.
