I doubt you can use the same algorithms to compute it on all the fingers 
of your hand so rules of the thumb are quite inadequate for the job. But 
Bruce Fraser has written on the subject and the Photokit Sharpener 
software is based on his method. The third stage of sharpening is what 
you are looking for. As that software doesn't interact with the driver 
it has not the sophistication of Qimage's method.
