I'll email a copy of the jpeg to you. From John's description, it sounds like the motor is actually working intermittently, so that would indicate the device driver is intact and the problem is more likely with the connector fix that was hardwired. Possibly a bad solder joint or a choice of connection points that don't actually pass through to all board layers? (In the jpeg, it looks like the fix/connection is being made to a solder pad and not to the connector pin itself -- that would be preferable). As you suggested earlier, I think it would be overkill to get into a mainboard replacement just to resolve that problem...
