Essentially that's main difference -- its grayscale instead of RGB.   
One big advantage of that is going from 3 dimensions to just 1.    The typical
target sheet for RGB has about 200+ patches, but that works out to only
about 6x6x6 or 6 samples per dimension.  So 21 steps in one dimension
is a lot more accurate -- which is impractical in 3 dimensions.
