Jordan, Did you remove the vent hole tape on the top over the sponge? I tried the new MIS filling instructions on a new cart yesterday also. I found that I had to remove the tape to get the sponge to fill. I did this before priming. After filling the reservoir with the vent tape off, I primed the cart while I held my finger over the vent hole so that the ink would pull from the reservoir and not the sponge.
