The i9900 driver is very well behaved in it's non color managed state. This makes it much easier to get decent B&W results with very good profiles, compared to Epsons. I have profiled 2 i9900s for professional photographers, and they are quite happy even for B&W portfolio prints. They are not what I would prefer, for example from a dedicated ink set, but for color ink prints they far exceeded any Epson (baring brand new K3 models) RGB driver mono prints. Select a paper or two and get good custom profiles. Someone suggested the Lyson inks, I would definitely not recomend them unless the Lyson version far outperforms the Epson version.
