i9900 and Black and White

i9900 and Black and White

2005-08-14 by skipper954

I know, the Canon i9900 isn't the greatest for BW printing. But that
is my printer. So..

Does anyone have feelings about the best paper (both glossy and
matte), and settings for this printer? As expected, I am having a
little trouble getting tint-free images, even after adjusting printer
color.

Please email a reply because I may not check this site for awhile.

Thanks

The i9900 driver is very well behaved in it's non color managed state.
This makes it much easier to get decent B&W results with very good
profiles, compared to Epsons.
I have profiled 2 i9900s for professional photographers, and they are
quite happy even for B&W portfolio prints.
They are not what I would prefer, for example from a dedicated ink
set, but for color ink prints they far exceeded any Epson (baring
brand new K3 models) RGB driver mono prints.
Select a paper or two and get good custom profiles.
Someone suggested the Lyson inks, I would definitely not recomend them
unless the Lyson version far outperforms the Epson version.

Tyler,

I suggested the Lyson for the i9100, not the i9900. We just happened to
have two seperate threads about Canon's pop up at the same time. Lyson
don't even do a 9900 QuadBlack inkset according to their website.

I have tried Canon matte (ugh) and photo paper pro.
On both, I seem to get better results using either
"print from source" or adobeRBG printspace, rather
than the canon profiles.

Tyler, (or anyone else) can you tell me specifically
what papers you have used with the i9900 and what
settings???? I know, they may not work for me, but it
would be a start.

Thanks

My experience has been with custom profiles only.

I only profiled for others, I have not used one of these printers
beyond what it took to profile them.
The papers we profiled were a Mitsubishi matte (don't know anything
about these papers, so don't know the specific product name), EEM,
PhotoRag, and German Etching.
We did a series of tests to determine the best media setting for these
papers, and I don't recall the result, sorry. I do recall that the
differences between them were minor and any one of them labeled
similar to a matte would have worked pretty well. Obvioulsy, after
profiling, they are not interchangeable.
