Roy: QTR 2.3 problems

2005-08-13 by Steven Karafyllakis

Hi Roy;

Last night I reinstalled 2.3 hoping a couple of bugs had been fixed,
but I guess not yet. Here's what's happening: The first time I tried
to 'send' an image from Photoshop, the GUI crashed. Oddly enough this
behavior was not repeated again in the 8-10 following tests. Next: I
tried to send it several 16-bit images I had printed before with 2.24,
and got two error flags: 'TIFF format not supported' and 'invalid TIFF
tags in file'. If I convert those same files to 8-bit, they print fine.
Anything to be done about this, or should I just wait for your next
update?

Thanks

Steve Karafyllakis

"Invalid Tiff tags in file" is shown if the TIFF XResolution tag or YResolution
tag are less than or equal to zero. "TIFF format not supported" is shown if the
TIFF file is not 1 bit, 4 bit, 8 bit, 16 bit, or 24bit. Usually this is because
the image file is in CMYK format.

What method do you use to "send" the Photoshop file to the GUI?. The crash is
most likely because the TIFF processor I use tripped over something in the file.
One speculation is that Photoshop is still writing to the file when the GUI
picks it up. (This could cause all the above issues.)

Some things to try: Save the file in Photoshop and then print it afterwards. If
this works, then the above speculation is correct. If not, you can send me the
files and I can determine what QTR doesn't like about them.

This is the first I've heard of that. 16 bit has been supported for quite a
while and I know it did work. If it's a QTRgui problem Stephen Billard
will have to look at it.

Hi Stephen, thanks for getting back to me on this

It was a 16-bit Greyscale file, about 200mb with an adjustment
(curves) layer. Only happens with 2.3 not 2.2.4

I put a shortcut in the PS 'Helpers' folder, which shows up in
the 'file' > 'jump to' menu item. Again, no trouble with 2.2.4

Tried that, made no difference. Only thing that worked was
converting to 8-bit.

As I mentioned above the problem files are big, I'nm not sure it's
worth the effort. I installed this mostly to see if I could generate
a curve for the R2400 yet, (no problem with that) but I din't
actually have one yet. I'll try a few different 16-bit files and see
if I can detect a pattern & get back to you.

Thanks,

The Layers is probably the source of the problem. Try saving without the layers.
I don't know of any reason why the behavior is different between 2.3 and 2.2.4,
though. No changes in the TIFF handling between those versions.

Could there be a problem just with the overall size of the file? I.e.
2.3 program is a little bigger so the overall size limit might be
slightly smaller?

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
