I am certainly not one of the greats when it comes to artistry with a pencil, but through my career of advertising and illustrative photography I have frequently sat down and sketched what I was going to do before I committed $hundreds or $thousands to making a photo. I still carry a notebook with me everywhere I go in which I will jot a note or two on a page (thus reserving it for "that" idea and come back later and make some sketches) . . . I have no training in "art" but if you do it long enough (around thirty years in my case), you begin to pick up on some of the basic concepts (many similar in photography) . . . I must admit though that as you get older the prospect of carrying around a pad and pencil (couple of hundred grams/few ounces) is much more appealing than waltzing about with three or four tons of battery (heavy) dependent techno-toys!
