Digital BW, The Print

Using the Advanced B&W mode on the Epson 2400, I have had good results 
from the Epson Enhanced Matte.  However, I want to get back to the 
heavier, more interesting texture of Hahnemuehle Photo Rag 308gsm.

I've tried various things without success.  In most cases I get smears 
outside the image area, or too much loss of shadow detail (too dark).

I had started with the same settings as used for Enhanced Matte 
(except I switched to front load).  I tried reducing ink by 20% - 
surprisingly, this made the smearing worse.  I tried the ICC profile 
from inkjetart.com - same.  I tried the Hahnemuehle Epson 4800 profile 
in colour mode - disasterous. everything purple.  I tried setting to 
Velvet Fine Art - smeared again.

I've run out of patience for testing this now.  Surely someone has 
managed to make this popular combination work well?
