The C86 can do that. I have a write-up at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm that you might be
interested in reading.

Most of the black inks are very warm. The black dye ink image you're
describing sounds like it suffers from considerably more metamerism
(changing apparent color with different light sources) than the carbon
blacks used my most of the better pigment inksets. (The HP may be part
carbon with considerable dye in it.) The pure pigment B&W inksets have no
significant metamerism. B&W made from color inks is usually at the other
extreme.

It might be a dmax difference that you're reacting to. High dmax with
pigments requires glossy paper and appropriate "Photo black" ink.

There's no guarantee that you're subjective tastes will be satisfied with
any particular approach. From what you've said, among currently available
printers I'd say the best chances might be a C86, MIS EZ-N gray inks, and
PKN black ink on Costco Kirkland Glossy Inkjet paper. It's also so cheap
the downside risk if minimal.

> I gather the Epsons have a single black cartridge. Is this enough?

Some like Black Only ("BO") printing. It often has a "tri-x" look up close
(the dots look a bit like grain). With the cheaper printers the banding is
often (usually?) unacceptable. I prefer smoother prints, which requires the
use of lighter gray inks as well as the black ink.
