Advice on an A4 B&W printer.

Advice on an A4 B&W printer.

2005-09-22 by thom999manson

I have recently decided to buy an A4 inkjet that will be dedicated
to B&W work. However, I really don't know which one to go for.

My options, as I see them now, are

1) Epson C86 (£58) with MIS EZ Ultratone cartridges (~£30)

2) Epson R200 (£61) with Generations QuadBlack (GQ) ink (~£52) + £30
for the driver

3) HP Photosmart 7960 (£50)

The problem with the HP is that I have to use their ink and paper,
so running costs are higher, and I believe it is not easy to get
matt or fibre papers.

The Epson printers are a bit more expensive, but cheaper to run.
Does the 6 ink R200 give better results than the 4 ink C86?

What do you think? Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Thomas

I'd stick with Epson printers and dedicated B&W pigments for entry level
B&W.

The R200, being a hextone printer, can make smoother prints than the C86.
However, the C86 may still be the easiest, and the improvement in smoothness
may not be visible in most prints.

I'll be making an EZ formula for the R200 soon, which MIS will mix and sell,
I assume, since there seems to be quite a bit of interest in it. (I have an
R200 which will probably replace my C86, which needs its waste pads replaced
-- and is probably not worth paying a service person to do.)

Some have also used UT7 and other variable-tone solutions in it, with QTR to
make curves. UT2 also works in the R200, but some curves will probably be
needed, and I do NOT intend to make a set of RGB Photoshop curves for the
printer, so either the EZ approach or QTR will be the workflow. With an EZ
approach, I might make a few monotone/grayscale curves if needed to
linearize for proofing purposes. (I use the small printers as everyday
printers and for making small proof prints that will then be printed on the
7500 or 7600.) It'll be a few weeks before I get to the R200 project.

Re: [Digital BW] Advice on an A4 B&W printer.

2005-09-23 by dannysoar

This is the kind of talk I am looking for. I'm a retread 70's semi pro looking
for a reasonable inexpensive printer capable of making a presentable B&W print
from a silver negative.

I have been using a HP Photosmart 8150 printer, a Dimage Dual II scanner and a
Windows 98 computer with Photoshop Elements 1.00 inside. The prints made with
the #100 gray cartridge are very sepia when viewed under tungsten and merely
very warm in sunlight. But otherwise they look, to my eyes, very nice. With the
black #96 cartridge they are OK, maybe better than the ones from my previous
cheapo general-do-all printer, but they lack the visual excitement of the ones
from the #100 cartridge.

I have been pestering the help desk at Hewlett the P with this since July 1 and
have been blown off the third time.

Will the Epson R200 or the C86 work better than the HP 8150? I'd like something
that made a neutral black print that had the glow, snap and detail of the 8150?

I gather the Epsons have a single black cartridge. Is this enough? Is it really
black?

The C86 can do that. I have a write-up at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm that you might be
interested in reading.

> ... The prints made with the #100 gray cartridge are very sepia

Most of the black inks are very warm. The black dye ink image you're
describing sounds like it suffers from considerably more metamerism
(changing apparent color with different light sources) than the carbon
blacks used my most of the better pigment inksets. (The HP may be part
carbon with considerable dye in it.) The pure pigment B&W inksets have no
significant metamerism. B&W made from color inks is usually at the other
extreme.

> With the black #96 cartridge they are OK ...

It might be a dmax difference that you're reacting to. High dmax with
pigments requires glossy paper and appropriate "Photo black" ink.

There's no guarantee that you're subjective tastes will be satisfied with
any particular approach. From what you've said, among currently available
printers I'd say the best chances might be a C86, MIS EZ-N gray inks, and
PKN black ink on Costco Kirkland Glossy Inkjet paper. It's also so cheap
the downside risk if minimal.

> I gather the Epsons have a single black cartridge. Is this enough?

Some like Black Only ("BO") printing. It often has a "tri-x" look up close
(the dots look a bit like grain). With the cheaper printers the banding is
often (usually?) unacceptable. I prefer smoother prints, which requires the
use of lighter gray inks as well as the black ink.
