Using the Epson 4800 with out the option of the RIP

has anyone out there used/purchased an Epson 4800 without option of 
the RIP that Epson will sell for an addtional 400.00  I am mainly 
interested in knowing what kind of black and whites you get out of 
this printer if you don.t buy the 4800 with Epsons RIP.
