Kill the print job when it is in the middle of the black patch. The print should eject with a half done edge. Post a high resolution scan of this part of the print so we can see the bands and their evolution in the dither. I'll bet the bands look like a breakdown in the dither where it suddenly turns perpendicular to the passage of the print head. Just a guess.
