qtr on 4000- black area problems with banding

2005-09-29 by mltphoto

OK, I have tried everything adviced to me for 2 weeks now, banding in
large black areas - night skies - are long and very faint. Print is 16
x 20 and bands are running long ways with the roll paper length. They
are faint, around 1/2 inch each, consistent bands of slightly less than
solid black. I have tried adding noise, black boost, and 2880 printing,
all on enhanced matte paper. Anybody else have a solution because so
far I love the rip and would like to use it but! Sitting here waiting,
thanks anyone. Will the newer version that jsut came out help on my
4000?

Try shifting the image left by 1 inch and see if the bands follow the image
or the stay in the same place, i.e. make a 15 x 20 print. If they stay the
same, I don’t think QTR could be the cause, leaving ink, printer and paper.

Best regards,
John Moody

Good advice but I have been printing from this file for over 2 years
and with the Epson profile and never had this problem, the first time
I used QTR there is was. I then printed another one using epson
profile just to make sure it was the QTR like you sugested, and no
help. I have done several kinds of test to make sure it is the
profile. Thanks anyway.

Kill the print job when it is in the middle of the black patch. The print
should eject with a half done edge. Post a high resolution scan of this
part of the print so we can see the bands and their evolution in the dither.
I'll bet the bands look like a breakdown in the dither where it suddenly
turns perpendicular to the passage of the print head. Just a guess. (I
doubt the new version will assist.)

"No help" as in it was in the Epson print as well?

The profile?

Are you getting this problem just with QTR or not?

Sorry Steve, I am 100% possitive it is only happening when I use the
QTR, the black areas are still good when using the Epson profile.

OK then you should do the stopped print exercise and let us have a look at
it.

Well I don't have a 4000, but I did have a similar problem with my 2200. In
my case it was with a glossy paper (Ilford Smooth Pearl, I think). Prints
would be fine with the Epson driver (using Paul Roark's method), but
printing with QTR produced banding in the direction of paper movement. The
banding was only in the deep blacks.

I determined that it was caused by pizza wheels on the 2200. The only cause
that I could theorize was that the Epson driver did not put down quite as
much ink as QTR and the ink was dry enough by the time it reached the wheels
that it didn't leave a mark. In my case I used the method suggested by MIS
to raise the wheels. From then on QTR worked just fine.
