I have one sitting right next to me. The actual depth of the printer footprint that sits on the table surface is only 16 inches. The paper roll housing can be disattched I believe (there are 4 hand tightened screws, one in each corner), although I have not done this. So without the paper roll, the minimum you need is the 16 inches plus some room in the back (Epson recommends 15 inches) if you plan to use the rear feeder. There are a couple of vent or air intake aperatures in the rear, so you need some room for these to be effective. In this minimum setup the body of the printer will overhang in front about 2.5 inches (it extends over the footprint) plus the extended paper tray.
