If it can't be accessed through a mailing list, I'm not interested. I've
signed up on some unknown number of "forums", and I rarely visit any of
them, except when I have a question, which may be as often as once a year.
Mailing lists, whose messages I've directed into appropriate mail folders
through mail rules, keep my attention.

But the biggest down side of bulletin-board style forums is that they don't
provide a way of keeping a post that contains useful information. In my
e-mail program, I do that by not hitting the Delete key.

A newsgroup (which can be on a private server, not just on Usenet) is sort
of an intermediate method--you don't have e-mail thrown at you, and you have
to open the group in a newsreader to see new messages, but it's still fairly
easy to save useful messages. Outlook Express lets you tag messages, and
keeps their contents in the cache even when they're gone from the server,
while Mozilla/Netscape lets you drag messages into local folders.
