Seems like I am not going mad after all (though I find it hard to 
consistently recreate the problem).
I am using Windows XP Home. The printer is one of two directly 
connected to PC. It uses USB 003 port. 
I am using the software supplied on CD in UK. I can't find a version 
number for it.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
