Each image is simply a file. CDs should be able to hold 600-700 MB of files (nominally 650MB, but capacity varies depending on what kind of blanks you buy). Archiving the original and final is similar to what I do. I save the original, "raw", scan as well as the finished product. I store raw images on one set of CDs and finished images on another set. Images are saved as TIFF files. I also produce CDs of moderately compressed JPEGs to send to the copyright office for registration.
