Re: Entry Level Printer

Andy,

part of the reason for establishing this group is that it's very difficult to get
satisfactory bw with a regular color printer. Most people who want good bw
dedicate one printer to a monochrome inkset of their choice and keep another
for color.

So, "on a budget" can be a problem because switching back and forth
(color/bw on the same printer), while possible is not very practical and can
waist a lot of ink.
Another problem is that with some inksets, carts are not a good way to go and
CIS (Continuous Ink System) is the recommended route. It adds to the initial
expense but pays for itself if you do many prints.

Lastly, all the monochrome solutions offered are specific to an Epson model.
Some are supported some are not. I use an 1160 with Piezo inks and CIS. If
you go to inkjetmall.com you can see what printers they support and how
much they cost. Older printers are harder to find than newer ones and often by
the time a bw inkset has been optimized for a given printer, a newer model
comes around.

These are the caveats to watch for. The good news is that any of these bw
solutions works a lot better than anything you can do with color inks. It's worth
a try, but you have to think of how much bw you want to do vs how much it's
worth to you to spend up front.

(and, no I don't know how to change the posting ID so your name appears
instead of the email in the Yahoo lists - other than to suggest that you use a
regular email client software as opposed to Yahoo's).
