Entry Level Printer

2001-08-13 by mojogroup@yahoo.com

Can someone suggest an entry level printer that I can start to do
some b.w (and preferably color too) digital work on? I just want to
get a feel for these processes and need some on a budget.
Thank in advance,

Andy

Also, does anyone know how I can get my name to preceed the
"From:" address. When I signed up I didn't expect to be named

Andy,

part of the reason for establishing this group is that it's very difficult to get
satisfactory bw with a regular color printer. Most people who want good bw
dedicate one printer to a monochrome inkset of their choice and keep another
for color.

So, "on a budget" can be a problem because switching back and forth
(color/bw on the same printer), while possible is not very practical and can
waist a lot of ink.
Another problem is that with some inksets, carts are not a good way to go and
CIS (Continuous Ink System) is the recommended route. It adds to the initial
expense but pays for itself if you do many prints.

Lastly, all the monochrome solutions offered are specific to an Epson model.
Some are supported some are not. I use an 1160 with Piezo inks and CIS. If
you go to inkjetmall.com you can see what printers they support and how
much they cost. Older printers are harder to find than newer ones and often by
the time a bw inkset has been optimized for a given printer, a newer model
comes around.

These are the caveats to watch for. The good news is that any of these bw
solutions works a lot better than anything you can do with color inks. It's worth
a try, but you have to think of how much bw you want to do vs how much it's
worth to you to spend up front.

(and, no I don't know how to change the posting ID so your name appears
instead of the email in the Yahoo lists - other than to suggest that you use a
regular email client software as opposed to Yahoo's).

Andy,

I use an Epson 1160 for both color and B&W. I have B&W and color pigmented
inksets in CISs and also use a lot of individual cartridges that I've
filled.

It is a bit of a nuisance to switch inks, and it takes, usually, 3 cleaning
cycles to get a good nozzle check when this is done -- that does waste some
ink. However, I don't do enough color to need to switch all the time.

The 1160 is getting hard to find, and it is not state of the art. The 6-ink
printer like the 1280 will do noticeably better color work (barely
noticeable, in my view). The problem with the 1280 and other newer Epson
printers is that they use the "chipped" Epson cartridges that make it harder
to use 3rd party inks. The continuous flow systems have overcome this, but
I'm not sure whether individual carts are available for the 1280.

If you can find a good refurbished 1160, I think it's a great bargain.

Andy,

You can change that appears on the list under Author by simply
changing the primary e-mail address you set up in your Yahoo account.

Not sure how Todd managed to get his to be "Todd Flashner" in black
letters. I suspect that he may have subscribed by sending a blank e-
mail to:

DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

from an e-mail program that had an identity "Todd Flashner" set up.

Not sure on this as Yahoo's software is rather "off" and does not
always do what they say it will. But in any case just change the e-
mail address associated with the group.

As for printers for B&W ink sets. As Paul wrote the 1160's are good
but getting hard to find if you are located in the U.S. New ones are
still being sold just about everywhere else. If you are in the U.S.,
you can order a new one from a European or Australian dealer but you
will need a 120V to 240V transformer and you will need to change the
plug or find an adapter.

You can get a refurbished Epson 1200 from Epson on line at the moment
for $234.

With either of these you will have a very broad range of ink sets
available in cartridges or in bulk with a Continuous Inking System
(CIS for short).

Of the new models available in the U.S. the 1280 is a good choice
with a CIS from: http://www.nomorecarts.com/ This will make most of
the inks available but not some of the ink/software systems such as
PiezoBW although they are planning a release for this printer
shortly. I have a 1280 that I am about to set up with a CIS for the
MIS variable tone inks and a 1200 with CIS running the PiezoBW.

Hope this helps.

Martin

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
