Hi: I can tell you that I've been using the 4990 with SilverFast Studio. I scan 8x10 B&W film using the 16 pass mode at 48bit 1800dpi. I run about 8 passes with the Neg taped to the scanner glass with red litho tape. After the initial 8 passes the film is heated and adjusts it's size. I then use a pek pad to push the corners out as well as the sides as I retape the neg flat. The neg is emulsion side up. I end up with a very detailed noise free image that I then work in Photoshop. I use PK Sharpener (see software reviews for it's unique approach) and output to epson 4800. I'm very very happy with this combo. 16x20 prints look awesome!
