HELP!!! - Epson 4990 or Microtek i900?

2006-01-18 by pinphoto6

Does anyone have any helpful input as to which machine is better for scanning negs? Most of
what I need to scan are long (up to 10in) 120 negs that have image all the way to the edge.
Holders usually don't work because they grip the filkm on the edges and I loose part of the
image. I have wet mounted on older Microtek (2500f) and this works well because it has
removable glass carrieer for negs. I know Epson is not equiped this way, and worry about
putting scanning fluid on only scanning surgace - sounds like a recipe for disaster. Any other
scanner suggestions? I am planning a 4x5 and 8x10 camera, so going up to this size would
be beneficial, otherwise I might look at NIKON 8000. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jonathan,
you may want to take a look at this yahoo!
group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WETMOUNTING/
As the name says, talks there are mostly about wet mounting, and on flatbed
scanners, specifically the Epson 4990 and 4870.

Paulo

Hi: I can tell you that I've been using the 4990 with SilverFast Studio. I scan 8x10 B&W film
using the 16 pass mode at 48bit 1800dpi. I run about 8 passes with the Neg taped to the
scanner glass with red litho tape. After the initial 8 passes the film is heated and adjusts it's
size. I then use a pek pad to push the corners out as well as the sides as I retape the neg flat.
The neg is emulsion side up. I end up with a very detailed noise free image that I then work
in Photoshop. I use PK Sharpener (see software reviews for it's unique approach) and output
to epson 4800. I'm very very happy with this combo. 16x20 prints look awesome!

Wetmounting to an extra sheet of float glass and having that
sheet of glass on top and the film clinging underneath it at
the right focus distance from the scanner bed takes away most
of what you describe as problematic. With Vuescan and the one
pass multisampling you lower the registration faults even more.

Sharpening has to be done anyway with the multiple RGB linear
CCD systems of the Epsons.

You're using optical glass to wet mount with?

Somewhere I have a price for the 8x10 version, it was pretty
reasonable.

Flatbed scanners have normally just selected white float glass
in their scan bed. Selected means that it is checked on air
bells in the glass and tin spots on the surface. White meaning
that the glass is somewhat less green. The rest is optically
correct enough for the job. So you order from a company that
does the selection for you or you order more sheets from your
local glass supplier and check the glass yourself. Don't make
too much fuss about the "white" issue, with 2 mm thick glass
this isn't a problem. I had some talks with the representative
of a German optical glass supplier and his comments are
expressed here.

Have to make a page on my site with all the details.

Ernst

epson 1290 microbanding

2006-01-19 by Finn Krogvig

Yesterday I noticed that I have got some fine detail banding in the
prints. It's like subtle white lines most visible in middle grey areas
like skintones. It's not visible in black areas or the lightest
highlights.

Nozzles are OK and I have preformed head alignment the best I could but
there is no difference. I am using PiezoTones and CIS - no apparent
trouble with CIS.

What should I do now?

Notice: I am cross posting this in the [piezography3000 group] too.
