Is Epson 4800 overkill for me?

2006-02-21 by G Guhan Gunaratnam

I need to buy a new printer. To date, I've been planning on getting the
R2400, but a local camera shop has dropped the price on the 4800 so it is
now on 2x the price of the R2400. It has tempted me to think about getting
it. I know the cost in ink will be significant, but I don't know if I print
enough to justify it.

I see myself as doing a lot of printing in the first two months, maybe 60
B&W prints (if on the 2400, 13x19, if on the 4800, I'd do 16x20) and then
average about 8-10 prints a month with peaks here and there. I could get by
with the smaller print size of the R2400 for now, but the price of the 4800
has made me think I could get that and keep the printer longer (instead of
replacing it in 2/3 years). It still won't be easy to get the 4800 (its
cheaper, but not cheap :) and would probably prevent me from getting a RIP
immediatly.

So if you were in my position with those printing numbers, with enough money
for a 4800, or R2400 with RIP and a bit extra for more paper and ink, which
would you get?

As far as experience, though my decision making skills may not be so great,
I think I'm a fairly competent printer and will be able to get the most out
of either printer.

How much would does it cost to do 10 13x19" B&W's on the R2400? How about
10 16x20" B&W's on the 4800?

Thanks for any and all help
