RE: [Digital BW] DIY PC with fear and trepidation

John,
I'm just catching up with my posts... I agree with the latest poster: Buy a
good machine (Gateway or Dell) off the shelf, and customize it. You will
spend less and have better reliability.

Sometimes certain parts just don't like to work together - for no apparent
reason! These guys will have figured it out for you!

As for the graphics card, many off the shelf boxes use onboard cards - so be
prepared to buy a mid level card, reasonable amount of ram on the card and
recommend the ability to support dual monitors, if that interests you (one
for palettes, one for the image).

Be sure the box you buy can support the amount of RAM you want to use. Some
off the shelf boxes limit the slots for ram, thus limiting your expansion
possibilties. Also, it may come with 1gb of ram, but it uses 4 256 dimms
using all the slots... so you'll end up throwing all the ram uot to upgrage
to 4 gb. So be sure you know how the ram is configured.

FWIW, I have been using this strategy with Gateways, recently spending under
$1k for the basic box, and then upgrading with more ram, better video card,
and second SATA drive.

good luck!

Graphically...I mainly use my computer for photo work CS2...Epson 2200
& 2400. I will die before I learn 10% of what there is to learn
already...let alone what there is to learn tomorrow.

I need to start planning on a new PC...I would buy a MAC and a PC if I
had the money.

I am going to put together a PC from scratch...and I am not sure
whether I am going to tackle building it myself, or going through a ma
& pa. I do watch and piece together video, but I am not a gamer, so I
do not know what graphic card to consider. I get concerned about not
knowing what I am missing vs. overkill.

I have 1 GB of memory now and will be going with 2GB. I am also
studying which AMD CPU is the most suitable...dual ?.

I have a headache from just writing this.
