Digital BW, The Print

Hi folks,
  I'm thinking about switching from an Epson 1280 with UT2 to an Epson
2400, so I can print color.  A question -- hmm, maybe two:

1) Has anyone done K-only printing with the 2400?  What's the method?
2) Didn't I read that Canon and HP are coming out with competition for
   the 2400?  Do you think those'll be any good for B&W?
