Well, just call them, tell them you like their company and want to buy a lot of stuff, but don't have a Federal EIN (employer identification number), you're an independent artist and don't want to post your SSN on the internet. Ask if you can just omit the ID number (I'm not sure I would enter a generic EIN). The reason that a supplier needs an EIN is to file information returns reporting income. I know of no reporting required for purchases of materials. If it is a sales tax issue, tell them you have no nexus (business connection or presence) with the state where they are located, if that is true. They can make their own decision about sales tax. Your state probably imposes a use tax (similar to a sales tax) for purchases brought into your state, but that is your responsibility. For example, we file a use tax return each month paying to the state the tax on out-of-state purchases that were not subject to our sales tax, because the point of sale was out of state. Sales tax is not an issue to us for that reason. If they want your business this can all be handled without any misrepresentation.
