According to our consultants, valid name/SSN pairs sell for about $50 each, depending on volume. So, a theft of 50-100,000 ID's is a pretty good payday, and seems to happen every week. I'll second Jules. Whenever available, use a PIN (e.g., driver's license) instead of an SSN. And get your free annual credit report, as required by law. People are pretty lazy/stupid with this info, e.g., no strong encryption, stolen servers, raid drives or laptops. Certainly this is OT, but maybe the thread will help photographers who buy stuff online, i.e., most all photographers. Back to trying to make a good image without worrying about the bad persons.
