Remember to keep your raw file if it’s a keeper image.  Without it, you will
not be able to re-process with different de-mosaicing, color balance, gamma,
noise reduction, or sharpening settings.  I’m sure there are even more
reasons.

If you have CS or CS 2, make sure that you have the latest Camera Raw
plug-in from Adobe.  This should convert you Nikon NEF files. (It does
with my D200).  When you click on the file in the Adobe browser, it'll
pull up the Camera Raw screen.  Do your RAW adjustments, and then save
as a 16 bit TIFF.  I recommend TIFF, because it's an open standard,
which means that it's less likely to become unreadable in the future.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
