John, the black carts are interchangeable and reusable. However, your printer will go through a charging cycle of all inks when you change carts. While I have never seen the definitive figures, I always figure that this process uses around 10% of the ink in each cart. I change the blacks as infrequently as possible and ususally have a bunch of images to print when I do.
